How can we help?
Find answers to common questions below. If you can’t find what you need, contact us and we’ll get back to you.
Learners
Finding a tutor, lessons and what to expect.
How do you match me with a tutor?
You tell us the subject, level, format and your goals. We look at which of our tutors teach that subject and level, are available at the times you need and, for in-person lessons, are close enough to travel. We then suggest a tutor and introduce you.
How long does it take to be matched?
We aim to get back to you within 1 business day. It can take longer for less common subjects or for in-person lessons in some areas, and we’ll keep you updated if it does.
Can I have lessons online or in person?
Yes, either. Online lessons work well for most subjects and give you the widest choice of tutors. In-person lessons depend on having a suitable tutor near you.
Can I choose my tutor?
We choose the tutor for you, so you don’t have to compare profiles. If you have preferences, such as experience with a particular exam board, mention them in your request and we’ll take them into account.
What if the tutor isn’t the right fit?
Tell us. Getting on well with a tutor matters, and we’ll suggest someone else if you’d like to try a different tutor.
Do you teach adults?
Yes. Many of our subjects are open to adult learners, whether you are studying for a qualification, improving skills for work or learning for interest.
Parents
Arranging tutoring for a child under 18.
Who should create the account for a child?
For learners under 18, a parent or guardian aged 18 or over must create the account and make the request. You manage the arrangements, and we contact you, not your child.
Should I be at home during lessons?
For younger children, we recommend that a parent or another responsible adult is at home during in-person lessons, and nearby during online lessons. See our safety page for more guidance.
Will I hear how my child is getting on?
Yes. Tutors share brief updates on what was covered and what to practice next. You can ask your tutor or us about progress at any time.
Are tutors background checked?
Every tutor who teaches learners under 18 must pass a criminal background check and a sex offender registry search before they’re matched with a child. Read more about how we vet tutors on our safety page.
Tutors
Applying to teach with us and how it works.
What do I need to apply?
You must be 18 or over, be authorized to work in the United States and have strong knowledge of the subjects you want to teach. To teach learners under 18, you must also pass a criminal background check.
Will I be an employee?
Tutors work with us as independent contractors. We find learners, handle bookings and payments, and pay you for the lessons you teach. You’re responsible for your own taxes, and we send tax forms where required.
How much will I be paid?
We pay tutors a set hourly rate for each lesson taught. Current rates are on our pricing page. There are no fees to join or to work with us.
How long does the application take?
The online form takes about 15 minutes. We review every application by hand and aim to reply within 5 business days. If it looks like a good fit, we’ll invite you to a short interview and ask for your documents.
Which documents will you ask for?
After we’ve reviewed your application, we’ll email you to request proof of identity, work authorization and qualifications, and your consent for a background check where needed. You don’t need to upload anything when you apply.
Can I choose my own hours?
Yes. You tell us when you are available, and we only offer you lessons that fit.
Account
Signing in, passwords and your details.
Do I need an account to request a tutor?
Yes. You can create one as part of the request form, so it only takes a minute. An account lets us keep your request safe and contact you about it.
Why do I need to verify my email address?
It confirms we can reach you. You can still sign in and send a request before verifying, but we can’t start matching until your email address is confirmed.
I’ve forgotten my password. What should I do?
Use the “Forgot password?” link on the sign-in page. We’ll email you a link to choose a new password.
How do I close my account or get a copy of my data?
Email us from the address on your account and we’ll help. Our privacy policy explains your choices and rights.
Safety
How we keep lessons safe.
How do you check tutors?
Every applicant is reviewed by a member of our team. Before teaching, tutors go through an interview and checks on identity, work authorization and qualifications. Tutors who teach learners under 18 must also pass a criminal background check and sex offender registry search. Our safety page explains each step.
How can I keep online lessons safe?
Use a shared space in the home rather than a bedroom, keep the door open, and make sure a parent can see or hear lessons for younger children. Tutors should never ask learners to move to private messaging apps.
How do I report a concern?
Contact us straight away using the contact form or by email, choosing “Child safety concern” as the topic. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911.
